JOB SUMMARY
The Palo Alto Medical Foundation for Health Care, Research and Education (PAMF) is a not-for-profit health care organization that is a pioneer in the multispecialty group practice of medicine. PAMF has a state of the art research institute that strives to be a national and international center of excellence in health care services, health policy, health promotion and outcomes research and training. This research institute leverages its close connection with the healthcare delivery arm, including comprehensive electronic medical record system, to evaluate new models of health promotion using state-of-the-art research methods.
The Disparities and Culture: Outcomes in Vitality Research Program (DISCOVeR) within the Health Policy Research department is seeking a dedicated, talented data manager. DISCOVeR is group of interdisciplinary professionals whose mission is to improve the quality of healthcare among minority populations. Our research seeks to investigate racial/ethnic health disparities in cardiometabolic disease risk, burden, screening, treatment and outcomes in multiethnic populations. We hope to uncover the trends and risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease and whether they vary among racial/ethnic subgroups, and consequently inform internal policies that lead to improvements in patient care.
DISCOVeR is seeking a dedicated, talented senior statistician. This individual will oversee data analytics and participate in data management activities for the program. Working closely with the analytics team (investigators, statistical programmers, analysts, data manager) and database administrators, this individual will be a primary resource for design and implementation of analytical needs and research plan development. A successful candidate will have a strong attention to detail to support a zero-defect environment, be an independent worker, have an ability to communicate and adapt to end user needs, is interested in building process and structures that last.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, BODIES OF KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION.
· Data management, especially familiarly with large relational database systems.
· Statistical programming
· Statistical analysis
· Methods in epidemiology
· Clear verbal, written and visual communication
ENTRY LEVEL FORMAL EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES.
Required:
· Education. A Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Informatics, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Economics, Health Economics, or related field is required.
· Experience. Skills or required:
o 5+ years experience designing and conducting statistical analyses.
o 3+ years of relevant clinical research experience, specifically with patient data.
o 2+ querying and analyzing large, relational databases (>1M records).
o experience working with stakeholders to design, author, manage analysis plans.
o ability to manage multiple projects.
o strong organizational, planning, and problem solving skills.
o strong interpersonal skills and a team player.
· Software. Proficiency with the following software and languages.
o SAS 9.X (Base, Stat, Graph, Access) in Windows (>3 years).
o SQL queries (>2 years).
o Experience automating processes through scripts and macros.
o Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access).
· Communication. Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills required.
· Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Preferred:
· Education. A Ph.D or Dr.P.H. in Statistics, Biostatistics, Informatics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Epidemiology or related field is desirable.
· Experience. Any of the following additional experience is preferred.
o statistical analyses: epidemiological studies, observational studies, randomized clinical trials, comparative effectiveness analysis.
o research plan development: development of research proposals, statistical analysis plans.
o research dissemination: experience authoring scientific journal manuscripts, internal reports, and other documents disseminating research results.
o working on a research team with physicians, analysts, consultants.
o interest in healthcare, epidemiology or outcomes research.
o any experience in a workplace requiring HIPAA compliance with patient data.
o experience automating processes through SAS macros and SQL scripts.
o any server administration experience, especially SAS servers.
· Software. Any of the following additional experience is preferred.
o SAS 9.X (Base, Stat, Graph, Access) in Windows (>2 years); SAS Advanced Programming for SAS 9 Certified.
o SAS Enterprise Guide 4.X, JMP 7.0+
o any experience with Stata 10+, R/Splus.
o any experience using Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop for retouching graphs and visuals.
o any experience with version control software (SVN), and knowledge management systems (Microsoft SharePoint, wikis).
